Over a period of time involving trial and error, our group finally came up with an idea to solve this grocery store waste issue. What may that be? Reusable bags, but not just any reusable bags. Our concept is to hand make reusable bags out of old clothes that might have been otherwise thrown away. These bags will be an option at grocery store checkout for free so customers can have a more sustainable and inexpensive option than isn’t already there.
An ABC News article states that grocery stores around the U.S are realizing the problem that plastic and paper bags bring in a grocery store. It also explains how recently, more and more grocery stores are beginning to sell reusable bags, such as Stop & Shop and Whole Foods. Whole Foods even decided to add a small, but helpful credit system that saves a few cents for shoppers who reuse their bags.

3. Method of Collecting Data/Budget:
Our CBL project is mostly made up of our group hand making reusable bags, so we don’t need a big budget. We will have $50 to spend, but we will most likely use less of it because, again, we are mostly hand making everything we have and most of our materials are generously donated to us. After our idea is pursued, we will get the data by first counting all the reusable bags we had at the beginning, and compare them to the amount we have at the end. Also, on our bags, we will have a website link for people to take a survey that asks them if they feel as though they have reduced plastic waste in their community.
As you can see, our group has done a lot to create this solution for waste in grocery stores. We hope that our project will inspire shoppers and company’s to do what we are doing and create a worldwide end to plastic and paper waste in grocery stores.
